Belmont Advances To NCAA Tournament; Beats FGCU 83-69

Belmont advanced to the NCAA Tournament after an 83-69 win against the upset excited Florida Gulf Coast University.

Belmont started the game much like ETSU last night – cold and lifeless defensively.

6-9 Croatian freshman Filip Cvjeticanin from the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles attempted 5 three-pointers and made 3 in the first half against Belmont.  While not a new story for the son of Croatian basketball superstar Danko, it was the story of the first half.  Shooting 50% from the paint in the first half, the lane for the Eagles seemed to part like the Red Sea.  But the Bruins had an answer for the Eagles in the second half.

The Bruins came out on fire, yet again.  After Ian Clark’s 3-pointer at the buzzer at the end of the second half, bringing the game to 3 points, the Bruins opened the second half on an 8-0 run.  Belmont seemed to contest every shot, finishing the game out-rebounding the Eagles 42-30, and showing the maturity of a team that can come back from a 12-point deficit.

Finishing the game with 5 players in the double-digit points, the Bruins cruised to their 5th NCAA tournament berth.  Lights out point guard Drew Hanlen led the game quietly, scoring only 6 points with two assists, and Ian Clark led the Bruins in points at 16.  Blake Jenkins was also 6-7 from the paint and also dropped a 3 for the cherry on top.  Belmont advances to the NCAA Tournament  for the fifth time in their last Atlantic Sun match-up.

Selection Sunday is a week away.  Save Belmont Byrd Cage to your favorites for all the possible match-ups!
